What's happening?
May/June
Last month, several 3rd and 4th graders represented us at the Chicago Student Invention Convention. 3rd graders include Wilson Cao, Michelle Lin, Caytlen Walker and Sydney Walker and 4th graders include Malik Heckard and Gabriella Sanchez. We have completed our earth science units and are starting the final unit of the year which covers various general science concepts through the Next Generation Science Standards. Preschool is studying how to care for the Earth through the 3 R’s and will also learn how to compost. Kindergarteners will learn about the importance of sun safety as we prepare for the summer. 1st graders will observe and discuss the structure and functions of different plants and animals. 2nd graders has started studying biodiversity and will compare ecosystems. 3rd graders will use what they know about traits and heredity and explore how animals have changed over time. 4th graders are creating and describing waves and the patterns they make to create light and sound. As we approach the end of the year, the weather is getting nicer and the temperature is getting warmer; please take some time to enjoy nature including observations of the plants and animals around us. Wishing everyone a wonderful end of the school year and summer!
March/April
We have started our earth science units! Preschool will learn and explore measurement before Earth Day in April. Kindergarten has started a discussion on weather and has learned about different clouds and what causes rain. 1st grade has begun their study on the sun and shadows and will continue observations of the moon and stars. 2nd grade has discussed air, wind and the water cycle and will investigate how these things change land. 3rd grade began their study with water and will look at weather and climate closely before a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry on April 3rd. 4th grade has discussed how different rocks change in the rock cycle before we look at different landforms and how the Earth's surface has been shaped. 3rd and 4th grade are still working on their inventions and may represent our school at the Chicago Student Invention Convention in April!
January/February
We've all had a really great time studying our physical science units. Preschool will look at sizes and shapes before comparing and contrasting different objects using their five senses. Kindergarteners are experts on pushes and pulls and will continue to observe motion in different directions, strengths, and speeds. 1st grade has completed their investigation on sound and have started observing light. 2nd grade has experimented with the properties of different materials and matter. 3rd grade has observed invisible forces like magnetism and will study electricity soon. 4th grade will build chain reaction machines and flashlights now that they have a clearer understanding of energy and the students will go to the Museum of Science and Industry on January 25th to see the Future Energy exhibit. In February, 3rd and 4th grade will begin working on inventions for the Chicago Student Invention Convention. By the end of February, we will begin our earth science units!
November/December
Our young scientists have had a wonderful unit with life science. PreK-2nd grade also took a field trip to the Brookfield Zoo to extend their knowledge of animals and watch as the plants and trees begin to change as the season changes. We are now getting ready to start our physical science units. Preschool will observe with their five senses and learn to use properties to describe things around them and Kindergarten will focus on pushes and pulls. First grade will study light and sound while 2nd grade will explore matter. 3rd grade will investigate magnetism and electricity and 4th grade will experiment with different energies and discover how they can be transferred.
September/October
Welcome back scientists! I hope everyone had a fantastic summer! This year, we will be starting the year off with life science. Preschoolers are going to identify living things from nonliving things, Kindergarten will learn about animal secrets and superpowers, 1st grade will plant and observe seeds grow, 2nd grade will sort plants and animals into groups, 3rd grade will focus on life cycles and 4th grade will look at the human body like a machine. We are going to have a fun-filled year of exploration, experiments, and observations in the Science Lab as well as out in nature and museums.
